Dominique Janssen: I never thought we’d win the Euros, it was a dream come true

Dominique Janssen and Danielle van de Donk interviewed each other for the Gunners’ YouTube channel on Friday, sharing their experiences of Arsenal and the Netherlands.

During the interview, van de Donk asked Janssen if she ever expected the Netherlands to win the Euros, after the Dutch side’s success over the summer. Dominique responded: “Well, it was our goal, but to really think that we would win it? No.”

Danielle agreed, saying: “No, it was a dream that came true though.”

Janssen went on to say of the support at the tournament: “The group games, they were sold out really quick, so I was expecting that there were a lot of people. But I think because we had so much success, it became more and more.

“Of course, you play to win games, and now especially that we won the Euros you want to do good here (at Arsenal) as well, and you want to show what we can. I think we all want to win all the prizes.”

Both women appeared in the final of the European competition, with van de Donk starting the match and Janssen coming on for most of the second half, helping to see out the victory.

The Arsenal pair had already knocked out some of their club teammates, as van de Donk herself scored the second in the Netherlands’ 3-0 win over England, with Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs and Jodie Taylor among those on the losing side.

Hopefully they’ll be able to achieve their goals of carrying their success into Arsenal’s matches, alongside the players they were sending home. Arsenal have made a very mixed start to the WSL campaign, winning one, drawing one and losing one, but got back to winning ways in the FA WSL Cup with a commanding 7-0 win.

For now, it’s back to joining up with the Netherlands for van de Donk and Janssen, as they face Norway in their World Cup qualifier.
