Wales manager Chris Coleman believes Ramsey can become captain of Arsenal and Wales.

Arsenal will be appointing a new club captain when Per Mertesacker retires at the end of the season.

Ramsey’s name has come up as one of the candidates for the armband, alongside Petr Cech, Laurent Koscielny and Santi Cazorla.

His manager at international level, Chris Coleman, firmly believes the midfielder has the credentials to take up the role despite taking the captaincy off Ramsey when he was made Wales’ manager.

“I tried to take the pressure off him because a lot of things had changed,” Coleman said, as reported by The Daily Mail.

“So I went to Arsenal’s training ground to talk to him and he was brilliant.

“He could have spat his dummy out because he is a great player for us, but he was absolutely fantastic.

“He accepted it and I’m not surprised by Arsene’s comments about him being a future Arsenal captain.”

Ramsey was appointed Wales captain by former manager Gary Speed in March 2010. He was just 20 at the time and Wales’ youngest ever captain.

However, Coleman took the armband off him and handed it to Ashley Williams in 2012.

Williams has been captain since, but Coleman insists that he envisages Ramsey becoming captain again.

“Whether I am a manager or not I see him as the Wales captain again in the future,” he said.

“I told him that when I took the captaincy off him because he’s got that about him.”

Arsene Wenger tends to opt for experience when selecting his captain.

Mertesacker took up the role when Mikel Arteta retired last summer. Laurent Koscielny is the vice-captain, while Petr Cech, Santi Cazorla and even Theo Walcott have worn the armband in recent years.

Ramsey, though, has spent nearly a decade at the club and does represent the club well, on and off the pitch.

He would certainly be a more long-term option that previous choices.
