Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi will undergo scans in the next 48 hours, with fears that he could be out of action for a long time.

Mustafi pulled up injured in the first half of Germany’s win over Azerbaijan, in an unwelcome additional complication to the Gunners’ defensive situation,” reports the Standard.

The reports goes on to say that Mustafi will need a scan to establish the extent of the damage, which he will undergo when he returns to North London in the next couple of days.

It leaves Arsenal with a problem to resolve before Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Watford. Calum Chambers and Laurent Koscielny are recovering from injuries, so with Mustafi out that leaves Rob Holding, Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal as options.

I don’t think anyone wants to see Sead Kolašinac leave the wing-back position where he’s performed so well, so if Koscielny and Chambers can’t recover in time the aforementioned trio might have to make up a makeshift backline on the weekend.

It’s not an ideal situation for Arsenal, and they’ll no doubt be hoping Mustafi hasn’t suffered a serious injury. Given the Germany manager Joachim Loew did suggest the 25-year-old may have endured ligament damage is a worry, but we should get a definitive answer in the coming days.
