Former Tottenham player and manager Ossie Ardiles believes Wilshere can play for England again.

Ardiles put aside his Spurs allegiances for a moment to admit he felt sorry for Wilshere while he was playing for Bournemouth against Tottenham last season.

Wilshere has struggled for form and fitness for a while and has a remote chance of making the England squad for the World Cup.

However, Ardiles feels he can still make it should he prove his form and fitness.

“I was very disappointed to see him in the last game against Tottenham for Bournemouth. He didn’t look fit at all and it was sad to see him playing that way,” he told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT.

“He really has to work very hard come back to fitness, get extremely fit, and then he will be a talent for any team. He could force his way back into the national team and that would be very good for England.”

Wilshere spent last season on loan at Bournemouth as he needed more first-team football to regain full fitness following yet another injury. He played against Spurs in April, but picked up a leg injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He’s now back at Arsenal and playing first-team football again, albeit only in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League. Should he not get regular action in the Premier League, he could struggle to get back into the England team.

There have been calls to see him return to the England set-up due to a lack of creative midfield options. England won their final two qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania, but were criticised for a lack of invention and excitement.
