Mesut Özil still hasn’t signed a new contract and Arsène Wenger says that talks have slowed down, so naturally the rumours about where Mesut could end up next summer have started to grow.

One prominent rumour in recent days claims that Mesut might be considering a move to Old Trafford, to join back up with José Mourinho. But the question is whether Özil would really be so keen on a reunion?

In Özil’s recently released autobiography, he talked about how Mourinho was often quite harsh on him. For example, after one particular performance, Mourinho said to Özil (via Daily Mail): “You’re such a coward. What do you want? To creep under the beautiful, warm shower? Shampoo your hair? To be alone?

“Or do you want to prove to your fellow players, the fans out there, and me, what you can do?”

Mourinho was the man who originally brought Özil to Madrid, and after the Portuguese left Real, Özil did too, for Arsenal. Whilst it may sound like José was turning Mesut against him with these comments, it actually helped the German to motivate himself to become a better player.

However, players often go through periods of their career where they need a certain managerial style to improve them. Now, Özil is already in his prime years, and whether he would benefit so much from Mourinho’s style is debatable.

Manchester United are currently likely to lose Juan Mata at the end of the year, as his contract is also running down. Özil could potentially fill Mata’s space, but a place on the bench at 29 years old surely isn’t the best offer he could get.

We should know more in the next few months about what the World Cup winner plans to do next.
