Chris Sutton thinks that Chelsea’s David Luiz fully deserved his red card against Arsenal on Sunday, even if Alexis Sanchez did wind him up after coming off the bench.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was quick to try and shift the blame from David Luiz onto Alexis Sanchez and referee Michael Oliver, for a ‘foul’ the match official didn’t give on Luiz in the build-up. However, whilst Chris Sutton acknowledged that was a factor in the incident, he believes the correct decision was made.

Speaking in his column in the Daily Mail, Sutton said: “That challenge by David Luiz was scandalous. He can have no complaints about his red. Luiz seemed irritated by Alexis Sanchez alongside him and lost his head when Sead Kolasinac went for the ball.”

“He came off his feet and went over the top of the ball. In terms of dangerous play that ticks all the boxes. Michael Oliver won’t have many easier decisions to make this season.”

In my opinion, the challenge was certainly dangerous and Kolasinac was lucky his leg wasn’t planted when Luiz made contact or the situation could have been much worse. The force of the challenge still left the Bosnian on the ground for a minute as it was.

David Luiz will now miss Chelsea’s mid-week Carabao Cup game against Nottingham Forest, as well as a Premier League trip to Stoke and Manchester City’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian had also picked up a yellow card earlier in the match for a high foot, so he should have been more careful not to commit any rash fouls anyway.

Chelsea had been frustrated by a defensively solid big-game performance from the Gunners, something that only comes around once every couple of years in recent times, I feel.
