Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has denied claims that his career is over, after suffering a knee injury with Fenerbahce.

The Sun initially posted an article claiming that van Persie had torn his knee ligaments and could be out for up to a year as a result. The striker picked up an injury in training after the loss to France, or so The Sun claimed.

However, van Persie himself took to Twitter to clarify the situation, and to everyone’s surprise, it seems that The Sun got all the details wrong.

The main point here is of course the one about the length of the injury. A year on the sidelines could have left the striker’s career “in major doubt”, as The Sun put it, given van Persie is now 34 years old. But three weeks, as the Dutchman claims on Twitter, is no more than the usual minor injury footballers endure.

The other thing to note is that van Persie says “I could resume the match after the moment the injury happened”, which doesn’t fit very well with The Sun’s narrative that the injury occurred during a training session. Of course, it’s possible that the centre-forward meant a match in training.

Either way, it seems that the injury isn’t as bad as people first thought. But fortunately, the former Arsenal striker won’t be coming back to haunt the Gunners in the Europa League this season, as Fenerbahce lost their qualifier to FK Vardar.
