Arsenal reportedly made a late approach for Sporting midfielder, William Carvalho, at the end of the transfer window.

Despite the year NOT actually being 2014, Arsenal allegedly made a Deadline Day approach for Carvalho while the 25-year-old was in talks with West Ham and Monaco.

Strange how the Portuguese international was reportedly so in-demand this summer yet as ended up staying at Sporting… again.

According to O Jogo [via Sport Witness], the Gunners didn’t make a formal approach for Carvalho. They just ‘showed up’ as another interested side while other negotiations were ongoing, which isn’t exactly surprising since they’ve been linked with the midfielder for years.

However, despite the links, no one’s ever come in with a solid approach for him.

Last season, Carvalho made 32 Liga NOS appearances, scoring two and assisting three. This term, he played one full 90-minute match against Desportivo Aves, which Sporting won 2-0, but has since been out with a muscular injury, which you’d think would make him extra enticing to Arsenal but apparently not.

The 25-year-old has three years left on his current deal and West Ham were said to be willing to pay £32.5m. The player himself was also allegedly looking for a move to London but the move fell through.
