Now that we know what our squad for the season will be, how will Arsenal line-up?

Although Arsene Wenger said that the 3-4-2-1 formation was here to stay, very little about Arsenal’s transfer business suggested that was the case.

While we did sign a left wing back in Sead Kolasinac, we also sold a centre back in Gabriel, and wanted to sell Mustafi, too. The plan may have been to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a wing-back, but he’s been sold as well. It feels like we’re one or two defenders short from really committing to the system long-term.

Hence, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Wenger reverted to the four man defence he’s so familiar with. One of the unexpected perks of playing wing-backs was Chamberlain having a place in the side, which essentially meant that we never really played with five defenders, something that feels very anti-Wenger.

In any case, there should be no doubt who the starting full-backs should be. Hector Bellerin should be restored to his rightful position on the right, while Sead Kolasinac will hopefully play on the left, as he was brought in to do. That leaves the centre of the defence, which isn’t as easy to predict.

Last season, Wenger preferred the partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi. While Koscielny will play if he’s able, the transfer window cast doubts over Mustafi’s place in the team. If Wenger doesn’t trust him that much, we may see Rob Holding end up as Koscielny’s most consistent partner in a two-man defence. In a three-man backline, Nacho Monreal would likely be selected over the likes of Per Mertesacker and Calum Chambers.

In midfield, the much maligned pair of Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey will keep their partnership for a while longer. Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny will likely play back-up. Keep an eye out on the sudden return of Jack Wilshere as well, who could feature again once he’s fit.

In attack, there’s only one choice: Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette. Whether we’re playing with three attackers or four, I see no reason why the trio wouldn’t feature in most games.

The only question mark is whether Alexis is in the right frame of mind to play. In which case, Danny Welbeck would probably play instead even though Olivier Grroud probably deserves to more.
