The Chilean press have called Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger “Don Arsenio” and believe he is trapping want-away star Alexis Sanchez at the club.

It’s fair to say that the Chilean press aren’t happy with Arsenal at the moment. They have a keen interest in the career of one of their best-ever players and feel that Alexis needed to move to Manchester City to have more success.

Their reaction to the move breaking down at the last second has been angry, to say the least. Yesterday, Francisco Sagredo of La Tercera wrote a piece about the “desolate kingdom of Don Arsenio”.

In it, he described Wenger as “lord and master” of Arsenal, who has trapped Alexis at the club in the same way he has trapped the club itself. The Gunners, they say, are drifting with a coach who’s exhausted his life cycle. And due to this, Alexis didn’t get his happy ending.

There are many sides to this story. Yes, Arsenal are drifting and aren’t as competitive as they used to be. We can’t attract the best players to come or to stay for too long. That said, we have our own interests to look out for, and allowing Alexis to leave without a replacement would be giving up on the season.

This melodramatic view that we’re mistreating the 28-year-old ignores the fact that he can walk away for nothing in a few months time. I’m sure Alexis can survive one more season while he honours the contract he signed when he joined.
