Uruguayan 21-year-old Federico Martinez is being targeted by Arsenal, according to reports.

The winger currently plays for Liverpool FC, but not the one on Merseyside – Liverpool Fútbol Club in Montevideo, Uruguay. According to The S*n, Everton have ‘stepped up’ their pursuit of Martinez, however Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are both apparently also interested.

Martinez’s goal contribution record hasn’t been particularly eye-catching in 2017. The young winger has made 42 appearances this year, but only has one goal and three assists (via transfermarkt.com).

However, that one goal was certainly one to draw attention, and in Uruguay the player has been compared to Angel Di Maria, claim The S*n.

Arsenal already have an emerging talent in the wide positions in the form of Reiss Nelson. The Gunners are also clearly interested in Thomas Lemar, who is also 21 years old, and have Alex Iwobi, who is 21 as well.

When you already have two young wide options and you’re clearly in the market for a third, to add to more experienced alternatives in the squad, I can’t see why you would look for a fourth unless they had a better record than the previous three.

Perhaps Everton are more likely to get involved, but I can’t see Arsenal really being in for Martinez at the moment.
