Alex Scott has announced her retirement from international football after picking up 140 caps for her country, scoring 12 goals and playing in three World Cups and four Euros.

The 32-year-old defender, MBE, made her England debut in 2004, not long before she signed for Arsenal from Birmingham. She’d already been an Arsenal player before that, joining the club aged just eight, before moving to the Blues in 2004 where she would spend just one year before returning.

Leaving Arsenal again in 2009, Scott returned from the Boston Breakers in 2012. She recently signed a new deal with the club in July.

“Today is the end of a chapter as I turn the lights out on my England career,” Scott said. “The decision has not come lightly but sometimes the right choice is the one that involves some sacrifice.

“My dream as a little girl playing in that football cage in the East End was to one day pull on the Three Lions shirt and represent my country. I am so proud and humbled that I managed to do just that

“What a journey it has been and I will always be so grateful for what the game has given me.”

Scott made her full debut for England against the Netherlands on 18 September, 2004, after playing for her country at both u19 and u21 level.
