Arsene Wenger has revealed he has a “three step” process to signing players for Arsenal.

Wenger has outlined the process that the club goes through whenever it signs a new player, all the while stressing how it difficult the whole thing is. “The success of our job is to get the right people in, as it is in any company,” he said, reports the Metro.

“The first three steps are scouting, getting the right people in. “Secondly, giving them the right coaching programme that develops them well, and finally integrating them into a competitive team that is destined to win football games. If you get the first one wrong, you go nowhere.”

It all sounds good, but looking at some of Arsenal’s signings over the year – or lack of signings, in some cases – it could use a bit of tweaking. Players come and go, and understandably not every decision made is the correct one. But it’s hard not to feel Arsenal could be doing better, especially when you compare them to our rivals.

Wenger went on to say that no matter how many scouts and analytical tools there are, it doesn’t make deciding on a player any easier. “We have scouts all over the world, we have analytics and video scouting as well – we have analysts watching games all over the world every weekend and you can see on computer how any player in the world is doing.

“It doesn’t make the decision easier because you still need to choose players who can integrate and suit our team.” Choosing the right player is a tough business, but nonetheless it’s something that has to be done.

Wenger has opted to not sign anyone at all when he couldn’t find his ideal player in the past, which has left Arsenal short on many occasions. In recent years, it seems he’s gone in the other direction and has signed players he’s not entirely convinced about, leaving us with a bloated squad.

Hopefully one day Wenger and his team will get it just right.
