Arsene Wenger claims that while Arsenal are open to the idea of signing new players, they will have to be an ‘exceptional player’… where have we heard that before?

Despite insisting that Arsenal are still active in the transfer window not long ago, Wenger has now rolled out his usual line about only wanting to sign exceptional players, which we’ve head around 6,000 times.

“We are open to an exceptional player,” Wenger told Sky Sports, reports Metro. “However, just to remind you we have 33 players here and they are all good players.

“That’s unmanageable so to bring one more player in for the sake of it would be stupid, but if we find an exceptional one, we will do it.”

After the Gunners signed Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon for a club record of £52m, it seemed as if they were going to dive right back into the transfer market.

Firstly, Riyad Mahrez was reportedly about to sign, and then Monaco winger, Thomas Lemar, became the main name being thrown around in the media.

When Wenger claimed that Arsenal were still active in the transfer market, the rumours linked Lemar with a move to north London were at their peak.

However, as the weeks have dragged on and the talks have been ‘ongoing’ for what feels like a lifetime, it’s feeling less likely that Arsenal will actually sign the 21-year-old.

These recent comments from Wenger don’t exactly scream optimistic, and knowing Wenger, Arsenal’s transfer activity could be done for the summer. However, he could just be playing his cards close to his chest. He did also previously mention about transfer activity kicking up a notch towards the end of the window… you never know.
