Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck says he is hoping to start alongside new signing Alexandre Lacazette this season.

Arsenal have plenty of attacking options this season and could field a number of combinations in their front three.

On paper, Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez looks to be Arsenal’s best trio. If these three are fit, you’d expect them to start every game in the Premier League.

However, Danny Welbeck is hopeful that he can overcome the competition and take a place in that front three.

He played alongside Lacazette in yesterday’s Community Shield win over Chelsea, and when asked about it, he said, reports the Daily Mail: “He’s come into the team and he’s got a couple of goals in pre-season and hopefully he will when the season starts.

“It’s nice to be playing with him, with the competition for the forward line now, it’s a healthy debate for the manager to have and I think everyone’s looking forward to the new season.

‘There’s always ways to improve and we will obviously sit back and analyse this game, where we were good and where we were bad and hopefully we can improve our performances and keep on getting better and better.”

Welbeck has been unfortunate with injuries since signing for Arsenal in 2014. A couple of knee injuries ruled him out of most of the 2015/16 and the 2016/17 seasons.

Simply having a season where he stays fit from start to finish would be a step forward for Welbeck. It’d be a hugely successful season if he can perform well enough to force his way in front of the likes of Ozil or Alexis and get into the starting line-up.
