Steven Gerrard has identified Arsenal’s defence as their weak point after their 4-3 opening day win against Leicester.

Gerrard told Premier League Tonight on BT Sport via The Sport Review that he had no worries about the Gunners’ attack, saying: “They look really good going forward. They’ve got a plan A and a plan B and they’ve still got Alexis Sanchez to come back as well.”

However, the area that Steven did point out as concerning was the defence, adding: “The worry for Arsenal is, can they defend properly? They’ve got a couple of injuries in defence at the moment and you can see on set pieces there’s big problems for them.”

The comments should come as no surprise to anyone who watched the game, as Arsenal put together a lot of nice moves in attack, perhaps underusing the talents of Lacazette at times after his early goal, but generally getting everyone involved and scoring four goals for their troubles.

On the other hand, the defensive display was a bit of a nightmare. With three centre-backs who had never started a game together it was always going to be tough. But there was no sense of security at the back, which will worry the Arsenal supporters.

Petr Čech was perhaps a bit disappointing too on the first goal, coming rushing out to meet Leicester’s Harry Maguire when he would’ve been better served staying on his post. He found himself stranded and unable to do anything about Shinji Okazaki’s header as a result.

Once Laurent Koscielny returns, he will add a lot of experience and intelligence to the defence, with Shkodran Mustafi, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel also potentially involved. With Stoke at the weekend, Arsenal won’t be given a break from set pieces, where the team really struggled on Friday.

Arsenal will need to address this problem if they want to challenge for the Premier League crown this season.
