Robbie Savage doesn’t believe that Arsenal will win the Premier League with Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka in midfield.

The former Derby man believes that neither Elneny or Xhaka have enough creativity to win the league, which is odd considering the latter assisted twice to help Arsenal beat Leicester on Friday night.

“You’re not going to win the league with Xhaka and Elneny in the middle of the park,” Savage told BBC Sport.

“There is no creativity there. You won’t challenge for the league with those two players.”

Arsenal’s midfield, or apparently lack thereof if you watch them play at times, has been an issue for a few seasons, particularly when it comes to defensive midfielders since no one’s quite lived up to the hole left by Patrick Vieira in 2005.

Mikel Arteta was a brilliant midfielder in that he was creative, could pick out a pass, and usually knew when to get forward. Towards his retirement, he lost his legs a little, but that’s to be expected.

I’m not going to try and pretend that Elneny is creative. He does a decent job at what he’s there to do and that’s about it. There’s a reason why he’s behind Aaron Ramsey in the pecking order, which Savage has obviously forgotten.

Xhaka has the potential to be a fantastic midfielder. He had the most touches and covered the most distance out of anyone in the Premier League against Leicester, and assisted twice. But he’s only 24. Of course he’s a work in progress.

Meanwhile, we also have Mesut Ozil. While he plays in a more advanced position, he’s one of the most creative players in the world, so I hardly think Arsenal are completely devoid of ideas, especially now that the playmaker’s been given more freedom in the new 3-4-3 formation.
