Journalist Charlie Watts claims that the situation surrounding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s potential move to Chelsea is all about money.

In a recent report for Football.London, Charles Watts pretty much summed up how most Gooners probably feel about the Ox turning down a new £180k-per-week deal with Arsenal and potentially signing for Chelsea this summer.

Watts reckons that the Ox must know that there’s no way he can just walk into his preferred central midfield position if he signs for the Blues. Therefore, disappointingly, is does look as if it’s all about the money.

“Ox can talk it up all he wants, but it’s about money,” said Watts.

“If he thinks he’s going to walk into the Chelsea team as a central midfielder he’s kidding himself.

“I like the Ox and he had a very good season last time out – but I really think he should be sold now, before it’s too late.

“Unlike Sanchez, he’s not worth taking the financial hit it.”

The 24-year-old has only managed to secure a place in the Gunners’ first team over the last six months and, to be honest, him leaving for money after the club stood by him as he spent a combined 154 days out through injury is a massive kick in the teeth.

While the England international has always said that he prefers a central role and wants to play regular football, he’s getting that now, so why the hold up? If the only issue was Arsene Wenger showing faith in him and putting him in the starting XI, there isn’t one, which does suggest that his reason for wanting to leave is financial.

As I said, it’s disappointing. The Ox made 29 Premier League appearances last season – the most he’s made in six years – but only scored twice. He’s only ever found the back of the net nine times in the Premiership since signing from Southampton in 2011.

Does this really warrant over £180k-per-week? Come on now.
