Nigel Winterburn says that Arsenal fans wouldn’t be happy if Raheem Sterling joined the club, since he believes that the Gunners need to strengthen in other areas.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Winterburn was asked about the potential deal, which would see Alexis Sanchez going the other way for Sterling, plus cash. He told Sky Sports via the Express: “I think the Arsenal supporters would say that we’ve got enough attacking options in our team at the moment.”

“What we are looking for his some stability maybe in central midfield. People are even suggesting another centre-half, we don’t know what’s happening with (Shkodran) Mustafi. I think there’s areas of the pitch Arsenal will be looking at.”

Whilst it’s true that a lot of the talk on social media has been about bringing in a central midfielder or a centre-back, that was when fans still believed Arsène Wenger that Alexis Sanchez would stay at the club.

Now that Alexis’ future is slightly more unclear, most Arsenal fans would probably want to see the club looking at replacements. Sterling represents a good option, with 31 goals contributed in 2016/17, as well as two goals already in the current campaign.

However, that doesn’t change the need to strengthen in the other positions mentioned. Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka didn’t work at all as a partnership against Liverpool, and neither did the centre-back trio, with Per Mertesacker and Mustafi left out for some reason.

Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri has told reporters recently that Arsenal are one of the teams he would consider going to, while Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk and West Brom defender Jonny Evans have both been linked with the Gunners in recent days.

It’s just about getting some deals over the line now.
