Stephy Mavididi has returned from an injury in top form, with the help of Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Mavididi is one of Arsenal’s most promising youth centre-forwards. Last season, he managed six goals and two assists in 11 appearances for the U23s, before securing a loan to Charlton Athletic.

He started strongly for the Addicks, but before he had the chance to settle, he suffered an injury and had to return to Arsenal. The highlight of his time at The Valley was a solo run where he carried the ball the full length of the pitch to win a corner for Charlton.

After his injury, he was left disappointed, seemingly missing the chance to prove himself. But he revealed to Arsenal.com that Ian Wright gave him a call to help him out: “After I got injured, I got a phone call from Wrighty and he was just giving me some advice and just being really nice to me and helping me.

“He just said that I’m still young, that I’ve got a big future ahead of me, just to keep looking at the bigger picture. In the bigger picture it’s a minor setback, only five months out of the game and just keep working hard and come back stronger.”

Mavididi took the words to heart, worked hard at his recovery and is now fit again for the U23s, starting their recent pre-season games. In his first game back, he played against Boreham Wood and scored twice in a 4-0 win. Next he went to Leyton Orient, and scored again.

Still only 19, Mavididi will likely be hoping for another loan to get himself some regular playing time. Charlton boss Karl Robinson is interested.

According to Kent live, Robinson was at the Leyton Orient match to watch Mavididi. And after scoring his third goal in two games, Stephy can’t have done his chances of a return any harm.

If he stays, Mavididi will surely be in contention for game time in Arsenal’s EFL Cup campaign. He is yet to make a start for the senior side, but if he keeps scoring it can only be a matter of time.
