Neymar has completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain, for a world record fee and we’re looking at his wages compared to other top earners, and the top earners at Arsenal.

The Daily Star has produced a ranking of the top earners in the world, to see where Neymar fits in, the breakdown is as follows:

  1. Neymar (see below)
  2. Carlos Tevez – £658k per week
  3. Ezequiel Lavezzi – £458k per week
  4. Lionel Messi and Oscar – £433k per week
  5. Cristiano Ronaldo – £408k per week
  6. Bale – £350k per week
  7. Hulk – £346k per week
  8. Axel Witsel and Gervinho (!) – £312k per week

Although the Daily Star gives Neymar’s wages as £519k per week, which would put him second on this list, the BBC gives a different figure, of £775,477.

This would put Neymar at the very top, and therefore make him the highest paid football player in the world.

Compared to this, Arsenal’s top earners aren’t paid nearly as much, and we’d thought we’d look at just how big the difference is. Here’s the top 5 for the Gunners:

  1. Alex Lacazette – £200k per week
  2. Sead Kolašinac – £150k per week
  3. Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez – £140k per week
  4. Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott – £110k per week

As you can see, none of the players listed even come close to the bottom of the list never mind the top.

This is as a result of a number of factors.

Firstly, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil are largely considered to be Arsenal’s star players, but both of them signed their current deals when they first joined the club. Therefore their salaries are out of date at this point.

Secondly, many of the players currently at Arsenal signed deals when Arsenal had more financial difficulty a few years ago. Therefore any players signed after that tended to fit into the old structure and not be paid as much either.

However clearly Arsenal are starting to break away from this now, based on the earnings of this summer’s signings.

But mostly it’s because Arsenal aren’t trying to keep a player like Messi, Ronaldo, Bale or Neymar happy. These players are widely considered to be the best in the world, and therefore command a top wage.

Many of the other players in the list are playing in countries that can only attract good players by paying incredibly high wages, because players wouldn’t choose them to further their career.

With the way that Premier League spending is going, however, it’s likely that players from the league will start to break onto this list at some stage soon.
