Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed for Liverpool, after turning down interest from Chelsea and a contract extension from the Gunners this summer.

Liverpool were locked in negotiations with Arsenal for the 24-year-old’s signature, having had a £30m bid rejected, but have now agreed a fee that will see Oxlade-Chamberlain make the switch from the Emirates Stadium to Anfield.

Chelsea appeared to be close to signing the England midfielder at one point, but he rejected their terms in order to push through a move to Liverpool.

I feel the Ox owes the club more than he gave given their patience during his injury problems. But to have made so much money from a player still flawed in midfield is great business.

Nemanja Matic joined Manchester United for a similar price this summer and the Arsenal man isn’t close to being on his level. To make in excess of £35m is something the board have got right, especially given he’s largely unproven in midfield – despite his obsession to play there.

The Ox is believed to have been frustrated with a lack of playing time in his preferred central midfield position and rejected Chelsea for fear they would utilise him as a wing-back like Arsenal have.

It’s turning into a bad summer transfer window for Arsene Wenger, given he previously made clear his intentions to keep the midfielder at the club, even if it meant him leaving for free at the end of his contract next summer.

But with the Ox not a regular first-team player, it could also be argued Arsenal got good value from somebody not starting every week.

After his woeful performance against Liverpool on Sunday, Arsenal supporters might be delighted to see him having left for any money at all.
