Calum Chambers would reportedly prefer a permanent move from Arsenal, rather than spend another season out on loan.

Chambers doesn’t seem to be in Arsene Wenger’s plans anymore, as he continues to be left out of the Arsenal squad despite a shortage of centre-backs. According to the Mirror, the defender came close to joining Crystal Palace earlier this summer, but a move broken down due to money.

He is still keen on a permanent move away from Arsenal as it seems he won’t be getting game time under Arsene Wenger. It’s unknown what exactly led to his move to Palace breaking down, however.

The report doesn’t specify whether the issue was with the transfer fee or the player’s wages. But there were earlier reports this summer suggesting that Arsenal were looking for around £20m for him.

Chambers spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, and some thought that he’d come straight back into the Arsenal squad this season. However, somewhat surprisingly, it emerged that Arsenal would be willing to sell him.

Arsenal are currently without Laurent Koscielny due to suspension, Gabriel due to injury and Shkodran Mustafi due to a lack of fitness. With Per Mertesacker also recovering from a facial injury, Arsenal have just one functioning centre-back in Rob Holding, and even he isn’t fully fit yet.

That Chambers can’t even get a game despite all that suggests Arsenal really are trying to sell him. While a loan move has been mooted, Chambers wants a permanent move so he can have a fresh start. Given the circumstances, few can blame him.
