Fenerbahce right-back Gregory van der Wiel is close to a move to Crystal Palace.

  • Van der Wiel was linked with Arsenal. A lot.
  • He was a former target for Real Madrid and Barcelona too
  • How times have changed

The Dutch right-back was considered one of Europe’s most exciting defenders during the late 2000s. As such, he was always linked with Arsenal, because the Gunners would always be interested in any half-decent young player.

Back then, van der Wiel was also being linked with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid. He’s now being linked with Crystal Palace. Palace’s new manager, Frank de Boer, has several connections with Dutch players and is looking on bringing the once-exciting right-back to London.

Van der Wiel ended up joining Paris Saint-Germain from Ajax, making 89 appearances and winning plenty of Ligue 1 titles before being sold to Fenerbahce in Turkey. As with most players who move to Turkey, he’s disappeared into obscurity.
