Wojciech Szczesny’s £10m move to Juventus will make him the 23rd most expensive goalkeeper of all time, suggesting the market for shot-stoppers isn’t as lucrative as many think.

  • Fans feel that the fee is too small for a keeper of Szczesny’s talents
  • Arsenal would have received much more money had they sold domestically
  • Szczesny’s fee is in line with fees paid for other European keepers

When it comes to goalkeepers, transfer fees usually aren’t as crazy as the fees we’re now seeing for outfield players.

While the £10m Arsenal will reportedly receive for Szczesny looks very small in comparison to other fees going around this summer, it’s actually very standard in Europe.

The fee ranks Szczesny as the 23rd most expensive goalkeeper of all time, amongst some pretty good keepers.

On paper, it’s rather shocking Everton’s Jordan Pickford cost three times as much from Sunderland as Szczesny did, given how the Polish keeper has achieved far more than Pickford has.

However, it seems the reason why Arsenal haven’t managed to get a large fee is simply because they didn’t sell to another English team.

English clubs are responsible for the some of the biggest fees paid for goalkeepers in the last seven years, while European clubs have spent far less.

While £10m is peanuts in the English market, it’s the standard price in the European market, where Szczesny has spent the last two seasons showing off his abilities.
