Have Arsenal sneakily revealed Mesut Ozil’s new shirt number?

In an interview with Mesut Ozil, in which the Germany international speaks about his new teammate, Sead Kolasinac, on Arsenal.com, the playmaker was referred to as Arsenal’s number 10.

The 28-year-old has been described as one of the best number 10s in the world more than once, held the shirt for Real Madrid, as well as Germany, and has admittedly been eyeing up the same shirt at Arsenal, currently held by Jack Wilshere. However, as far as we knew (and still know) he was still number 11.

Ozil having the number 10 shirt makes a lot of sense considering it’s usually handed to one of the most important first team players, or the most creative attacking midfielder, which the German certainly is for Arsenal.

What’s more, Wilshere is currently still sidelined after fracturing his fibula while on loan at Bournemouth last season and only has one year left on his current deal with no new contract in sight.

The interview has now been edited to refer to Ozil as ‘our No 11’ but was the original ‘mistake’ not a mistake at all? Were the club hinting at the playmaker’s new shirt number?

The Gunners’ Twitter account appears to be in a cheeky mood today, reminding fans that on this day in 2014, Arsenal signed Alexis Sanchez, who’s been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City for a week now… so perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to rule it out.
