After two matchdays at Euro 2017, things are starting to get very interesting indeed as Jodie Taylor continues to score for fun for England.

Group A

The Netherlands beat Denmark 1-0 in the latest round of Euro 2017 games with a Spitse penalty and are looking good to qualify. Belgium surprised Norway and registered the first big upset of the tournament with the debutantes winning 2-0.

All four teams can still qualify for the knock-out stage.

Group B

Germany struggled to beat a valiant Italian team that came back from 1-0 down but had a player who was stupid enough to be sent off for two bookable offences.

As usual Germany are not firing on all cylinders in the group stage, but still won 2-1. They will likely raise their level later in the tournament.

Italy are eliminated while the other three teams will compete for the top two spots.

Group C

There was a huge upset when Austria nearly beat tournament favourites, France. They took an early lead and France went into their usual panic mode, but were rescued by their defensive midfielder, Henry, who was on fire.

The game finished 1-1 with both teams looking to qualify on matchday three.

In the other game Switzerland beat Iceland 2-1, a game marred by an injury to the Swiss goalkeeper who took a long time to recover from a clash of heads and was stitched up on the pitch.

Injury time in the second half was eleven minutes.

Iceland are eliminated and I don’t think anyone will miss their rugby-style football based on fouling and kicking. They have wonderful fans but did not try to play football much.

Group D

England won the battle between the two top teams in this Euro 2017 group, with a 2-0 win against tournament outsiders Spain despite having only 22% of possession.

Arsenal’s Jodie Taylor is the competition’s topscorer and scored her fourth goal on the night.

It was a top quality, resilient defensive performance for England following an attacking display against Scotland.

Scotland lost to Portugal, a game they could not afford to lose against the weakest team of the group. Poor tactics and player selection led to another defeat – this time 2-1 and they will need a miracle to qualify.

Qualification for the quarter finals

The top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter finals and the regulations are quite complex if you are not used to the UEFA competition format, therefore there is a full page explanation here about what teams need to qualify.

Danielle van de Donk

“Netherlands are through as group winners with a draw. They can only be knocked out if they lose to Belgium and Denmark win. Even then the Netherlands will be through if they lose by a one-goal margin other than 1-0 regardless of the Denmark score. If Belgium win 1-0 and Denmark win 1-0 then the Netherlands and Denmark will be split on disciplinary points, or then on coefficient, which favours Denmark.”

Lisa Evans

“Scotland must win by two goals and hope Portugal lose.”

Jordan Nobbs, Alex Scott, Fara Williams, Jodie Taylor

“England are through with a win, a draw or even a one or two-goal defeat, If England lose by three or more, they will be out if Spain win. If England lose 2-0 and Spain win, England would be at worst second ahead of Portugal on overall goal difference.”
