Crystal Palace are renewing their interest in Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, according to reports.

The Daily Mail have said after Palace’s £16m bid was rejected last week, the Eagles plan to return with an improved offer for the defender. Arsenal reportedly want £20m so the two clubs are not too far apart.

Chambers impressed on loan at Middlesbrough last season, successfully transitioning into a centre-back. Arsenal will need more central defenders in the coming season than they did in 2016/17 given the change in formation – 3-4-2-1.

They may feel there is no great need to sell Chambers as a result. The 22-year-old, who is still on holiday after his involvement with the England’s U21s has stated a desire for playing time next season.

Arsene Wenger might consider another season-long loan move ahead of the upcoming campaign to ensure Chambers is continuing his development.Rob Holding is ahead of him in the pecking order now so the centre-back desperately needs to be playing regular whereever it takes him.
