Joel Campbell has pulled out of the Gold Cup after suffering a knee injury in Costa Rica’s game against Canada.

Campbell suffered the injury in the 24th minute of Costa Rica’s second group stage match. It comes as yet another setback for a player who was loaned out last season for fifth time since joining Arsenal in 2011.

He confirmed on Twitter that the injury has meant pulling out of the Gold Cup, which wasn’t due to end until July 27th. This means the focus moves to recovery and rehabilitation.

The 25-year-old has made more appearances for his loan clubs than with the Gunners and was expected to leave this summer as a result. Campbell’s previous squad number 28 has been given to Lucas Perez for next season and his contract is up in 2018.

With only a month and a half of the transfer window left to go, Campbell will struggle to get fit for any interested clubs, meaning the most likely scenario is that he stays until January 2018 or next summer.

We wish him the best with his recovery and the coming season.
