Athletic Bilbao want to sign Nacho Monreal this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The Basque club want to strengthen their defence but are finding targets hard to come by due to their policy of only signing Basque born players.

As a result, Monreal, born in Pamplona, is regarded as something of a dream signing for the club, alongside Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta.

According to Don Balon, Athletic Bilbao would like to sign Monreal this summer but know that Arsenal currently do not want to sell him.

Although the Gunners recently signed a left-back in Sead Kolasinac, Monreal is an experienced and versatile member of the squad. The Spaniard can play at centre-back and wing-back.

Monreal is believed to be happy at Arsenal, but that could change should he struggle for games next season as he’s hopeful of winning a place in Spain’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
