Arsenal announced winger Nathan Tormey has signed his first professional contract at the club, having successfully progressed from the academy.

“Congratulations to Nathan Tormey, who has signed his first professional contract with the club,” said Arsenal.com. “A boyhood Arsenal fan, he joined our Hale End academy at under-12 level. We look forward to Nathan’s continued progress with the club this season.”

The teenager is described as a “technically gifted and pacey winger” and will now be working towards working his way up to the first-team.

Tormey will take inspiration from seeing Alex Iwobi having developed into a first-team players, while Reiss Nelson impressed during the Gunners’ pre-season tour of Australia and China.

He will have stiff competition to make the early step-up given the likes Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and even Iwobi aren’t deemed starters for Arsenal – let alone the rumours of Thomas Lemar joining this summer.

But Tormey will be fully focused on listening to the advice given to him by the youth coaches and will be looking to impress enough to stand a chance of featuring in the cup competitions and maybe Europe.

Manager Arsene Wenger often allows his fringe players and youngsters to get run outs in the early rounds of domestic cups so we may see the 17-year-old this season if he stands out enough on the training ground.
