Two Arsenal players were in action for their countries on Thursday. Here’s how they got on:

Granit Xhaka was a second-half substitute as Switzerland created history by extending their winning run to six, for the first time during their 112-year history.

Vladimir Petkovic’s side have impressed in recent fixtures and although it was unlikely that they’d slip up against Belarus, it was equally important to avoid complacency.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s opener after nine minutes proved enough for a victory and clean sheet although Xhaka himself was booked late on as a heated scuffle broke out with just minutes remaining.

The goal was rather special…

Alex Iwobi started and played 70 minutes as Nigeria’s sole centre-forward during a 3-0 friendly win over Togo too.

The 21-year-old winger, who made his senior debut for the Super Eagles under Sunday Oliseh back in October 2015, featured for the second time up-top.

Having played there alongside Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho during a 1-1 draw against Senegal back in March, he was trusted with the role once more and created two first-half assists too.

Iheanacho made it three with an easy tap-in before the interval and unsurprisingly, the tempo slowed as plenty of changes were made after the break.

It was a good individual performance from Iwobi and he’ll be hoping for better displays in future with tougher opposition to come, especially as his efficiency in the final third still needs work.

This will give him some much-needed confidence with tougher opposition to come. They are set to face South Africa in an African Cup of Nations qualifier next Friday and will be keen to maintain their winning run.
