Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins has said he hopes Arsenal sign quality players this summer.

  • Wilkins believes Wenger will spend big
  • He dislikes the treatment Wenger has received

Wilkins spoke to Sky Sports News HQ about his thoughts on Arsene Wenger’s new contract.

“I think Arsene will go out and I hope he spends money because I don’t like seeing someone of his stature being ridiculed as he was last year,” he said.

Wenger was subject to protests and abuse last season as Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League. The manager thought a line had been crossed by the fans this season.

Arsenal will be playing in the Europa League next season and could be in the market for a couple of big money players this summer.

“He’s done a wonderful job for Arsenal and for English football, I just hope he puts the club’s money up front and buys some real stellar people.”

What Wilkins means by “real stellar people” is open to debate, and no doubt he and the club will have different ideas about what a good signing is.

These types of comments come out every summer. They’re usually the prelude to comments later in the season criticising the club for any signings they did make.

Everyone, of course, will be hoping Arsenal sign good players. But we won’t know how good a signing is until later on in the season.
