Newcastle have reportedly triggered the release clause of Florian Lejeune.

  • Newcastle trigger his £8.7m release clause

The Eibar centre back had been linked with Arsenal and Tottenham, but it seems he’s on the verge of joining Newcastle.

According to Sports Lens, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez was keen to sign the defender and had the club trigger his £8.7m release clause.

Lejeune played nearly every game for Eibar last season and helped them to a respectable mid-table finish.

You’d think that if really was a target for Arsenal, they would have went ahead and triggered that release clause, which seems extremely cheap in today’s market.

Arsenal haven’t been linked with many centre backs this summer, which suggests that they aren’t looking to strengthen there.

New signing Sead Kolasinac can also play centre back, while Calum Chambers is returning from his loan from Middlesbrough.

Arsenal have plenty of options at the back already.
