Shkodran Mustafi has looked ahead to the Confederations Cup in Russia starting next week.

  • Mustafi will be vice-captain in an experimental squad
  • He is one of just three World Cup winners in the squad
  • Mustafi wants to the win the tournament

Germany enter the Confederations Cup as the World Cup holders and although they’ve sent a far from full strength squad, Mustafi is determined to win it.

“We’re going there to win. We haven’t won the Confederations Cup yet,” Mustafi said to German media.

Mustafi will be just one of three World Cup winners in Joachim Loew’s squad as a number of key players, such as Mesut Ozil, have been given time off. Mustafi will be the squad’s vice-captain and see the tournament as an opportunity for experimentation.

“It’s not the same squad as the one for the World Cup or Euros, but it gives us a chance to try some new things. We also get the chance to play in the Russia World Cup stadiums, which is an advantage.”

Germany kick-off their campaign against Australia on June 19 before they face Alexis Sanchez’s Chile on June 22.

I’m sure Arsenal fans everywhere will be hoping that Mustafi doesn’t get too tough and physical with him.

Should Germany reach the final on July 2, Mustafi could miss Arsenal’s tour of Australia due to requiring rest.
