Hector Bellerín and the rest of Spain’s key players were rested after their midweek win over Portugal, as Albert Celades chose a second-string side for their slender 1-0 victory over Serbia.

Bellerin, who has been continually linked with a lucrative switch to Barcelona, had started and completed the full 90 minutes in both of Spain’s previous Group B fixtures before this game.

Real Sociedad’s Álvaro Odriozola started in a new-look backline which included rumoured Gunners target, Jose Gayá, and Borussia Dortmund’s versatile Mikel Merino.

Spain could potentially face either Germany or Slovakia, depending on results elsewhere this weekend and it’s likely that Celades will reshuffle his squad once more so the key players return from their well-earned rest.

Having already virtually qualified for the last-four after their 3-1 win over Portugal, it was a bold move from their boss but one that paid off in the end.
