Marco Asensio, heavily linked with a Premier League move to Arsenal, is set to be offered a contract extension at Real Madrid which includes an eyewatering release clause.

Asensio, 21, netted 10 goals and created four more assists across all competitions last season. The versatile midfielder joined from Mallorca two summers ago but enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last term under Zinedine Zidane’s management and has relished playing for his idol.

In an attempt to scare away possible suitors, the UEFA Champions League winners are keen to wrap up this deal quickly.

Asensio is currently in Poland alongside Hector Bellerín with Spain u21s, as they prepare for their European Championship campaign and there are sure to be a multitude of scouts analysing performances at this summer’s youth tournament.

The release clause n his new contract itself is believed to be €350m, whilst offering him a rumoured £35,000-a-week deal. It’s a significant increase on his existing £10k-pw wage, although it wouldn’t be a surprise if the creative Spaniard asked for increased first-team involvement too.

Asensio only completed the full 90 minutes on four occasions in La Liga last season and despite being versatile enough to play a variety of positions, represents the new generation at the Bernabeú.

This news will come as an unwelcome blow for Arsenal, who were reportedly prepared to make an offer for the youngster this summer. Liverpool had tabled a £42m bid according to reports in May, though nothing was confirmed.

For the foreseeable future though, it seems as though Asensio will remain in Spain.
