20-year-old Benfica winger, Diogo Gonçalves, once described as Arsene Wenger’s ‘passion’, is set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.

  • Gonçalves set to join Wolves on loan
  • Previously said he wasn’t ready to join English leave
  • Benfica won’t allow 20-year-old to leave permanently
  • Player scored 10 and assisted 10 for Benfica B last season

Gonçalves was previously linked with Arsenal amid claims that Wenger was incredibly ‘passionate’ about bringing the winger to north London.

However, while the 20-year-old Benfica wonderkid has politely turned down the Gunners’ advances, it now appears that he’ll be singing for Wolves on loan.

Wolves’ new Portuguese manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, is said to be ‘waiting’ for Gonçalves to join his squad next season, according to Record [via Sport Witness]. However, Benfica won’t allow the talented youngster to leave permanently.

Last season, Gonçalves made 40 appearances for Benfica B over all competitions, scoring 10 goals and assisting the same amount.

He’s being touted as a player to watch for the future but with four years left on his current deal, it’s doubtful that the Portuguese side will let him go without a fight.
