Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka has been told he will not be leaving the club this summer, amid interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

  • Goretzka has 12 months remaining on his contract
  • Schalke would rather lose the player for nothing next season
  • Arsenal and Spurs are interested

According to talkSPORT, the 22-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his current contract, but Schalke’s general manager Christian Heidel was clear he would be going nowhere. “Leon will not be able to change clubs this summer. He will remain at Schalke beyond this summer,” he said.

“We have sporting goals, that is why selling him prematurely does not make any sense to us. I do not want to negotiate with other clubs about Leon Goretzka.”

There had been some thought that Arsenal could sign the player for a reduced price given his contract situation, but it seems they’ll have until next summer.

Arsenal are looking at midfielders now that Santi Cazorla is set to remain out with an achilles injury until next December. Jack Wilshere’s future is also in doubt.

Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Bayern Munich are interested in Goretzka as well, which means Goretzka could be one of the hottest free transfers around next summer.

It’s also possible that Schalke’s position on the player could change, especially if a big offer comes their way.
