Arsenal are on alert as contract talks between Blaise Matuidi and PSG have stalled.

  • Matuidi has yet to extend his contract with PSG
  • His father has said the midfielder will explore his options

Matuidi looked set to sign an extension with PSG, but the appointment of a new sporting director has delayed things.

His father, Faria, has said that the midfielder will now consider his options.

“A few weeks ago, Blaise was more interested in staying at PSG,” he said.

“Now the situation is much more mixed. PSG, and in particular their new sporting director [Antero Henrique], have been slow to reveal their intentions.

“For that reason we’re listening attentively to the advances of other clubs.

“There’s a feeling, rightly or wrongly, that everything said [by PSG] in the past few months is now part of ancient history.”

The situation could be encouraging for Arsenal, who may strengthen in midfield this summer.

Matuidi has been linked with Arsenal since his St. Etienne days. Back then, he was touted as a young, tough tackling midfielder that would add the bite that was missing from Arsenal’s midfield.

Since joining PSG, though, he’s developed into a dynamic box-to-box midfielder who makes good late runs into the opposition penalty area. As a partner for Granit Xhaka, he could be ideal.

However, at 30 years of age, he’s likely to start slowing down, and would only be a short-term investment for Arsenal.
