Arsenal have enquired about Eibar centre-back Florian Lejeune, with a view to making an official approach this summer.

  • Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle are interested in the French defender
  • Arsenal have asked Eibar if he’s available

The Daily Star report that Arsenal have asked Eibar about the availability of French defender Florian Lejeune. They state the Gunners will have competition from Tottenham and Newcastle.

The report contradicts previous rumours that Lejeune had an £8.7m release clause in his contract, something Arsenal wouldn’t have to enquire about given their intel.

Lejeune has had something of a journeyman career, having played for seven clubs already. At 26, he seems to have settled at Eibar. He played in every league game for the club as they achieved an impressive mid-table finish.

The Frenchman is said to be an aggressive, no nonsense defender. But Arsenal have several options in the centre of defence, with Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel Paulista, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding in the first-team, so it’s perhaps unlikely they are actively looking for another player at the heart of the backline.
