Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling has been placed on the transfer list by manager Jose Mourinho and could be a target for Arsenal given their previous interest.

Arsenal have offered for his services in the past and the Express believe a move away from Old Trafford could now be on the cards for Smalling after being informed he was surplus to requirements.

Smalling was singled out for criticism by the Red Devils boss on a number of occasions last season and endured a stop-start campaign in 2016/17 as a result of injury problems and inconsistent form. He made just 18 Premier League appearances, 13 starts.

Arsenal are currently overstocked in the defence but Smalling is a player the Gunners have wanted to sign for some time. The ex-Fulham centre-back hasn’t been at his best for Mourinho but is still considered highly for England and would be a good addition to most sides in the league.

His United teammate Phil Jones looks safe from the cull this summer and is expected to join the squad for pre-season in America. The fellow England international made the same amount of Premier League appearances as Smalling last season and seemed to be used as much as possible whenever fit.
