Johan Djourou could be set for a return to Premier League football this summer.

The 30-year-old defender, who spent ten years at Arsenal before joining Bundesliga club Hamburg in 2014 for £2.5m, has attracted interest from Slaven Bilic’s West Ham side.

The Hammers have conceded 59 goals in the league this season, only five sides currently have worst statistics in the defensive department. This has not been helped by constant switches within West Ham’s backline, with experienced fullback Álvaro Arbeloa (4) their only senior defender that hasn’t made at least ten league appearances this season.

James Collins’ contract expires next summer and with an ageing defence, it makes sense that they are on the lookout for significant improvements ahead of the summer window.

However, the Switzerland international might not be the best option for them in the long-term. Having made 14 Bundesliga club appearances for Hamburg, he has struggled with hamstring and groin injuries in his attempts to play on a weekly basis.

His league statistics this season (source: Squawka):

– Started on 14 occasions, played 1,147 minutes
– Four defensive errors, six yellow cards
– 24 fouls committed, 15 of 30 completed tackles lost

With that being said though, the fact that his current deal expires this summer makes him an interesting option as a free agent.

Given his Premier League experience, West Ham’s interest in his services will have intensified.
