Danny Welbeck was a second-half substitute during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane and admitted his disappointment after yet another defeat.

It was a surprise that, given Spurs’ impressive form of late, Wenger opted to start with Olivier Giroud up-top instead of Welbeck. Quick-fire goals from Dele Alli and a Harry Kane penalty helped seal the points early in the second-half before Welbeck was introduced.

Coming on in an attacking alteration for Granit Xhaka with 25 minutes to play, the 26-year-old tried to assert his presence on the match but his team-mates struggled to match his  intensity levels.

Spurs were comfortable with a lead to protect and could’ve easily added to it.

Despite this though, Welbeck was honest in his post-match assessment of it all. After the game, he said, “It’s obviously difficult to take and I felt we had a bit of control in the game but with the way it ended, 2-0 is not good for us at all.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, albeit with a game in hand. The race for UEFA Champions League qualification continues to intensify and with defeats like these, it’s clear that Arsenal will need a winning run – as well as some fortune elsewhere – to secure a top-four place again this term.

When questioned about it Welbeck said, “We’re professional and we need to fight right until the end. As a team, get together, analyse the game and then move on from this.

“It’s very difficult to take for the club, for all the players, the fans. It’s not a nice one to lose and we want to make it right next week.

Encouraging words from a player that should’ve started on this occasion, but will they mean anything when Arsenal face Manchester United next weekend? Probably not.
