Midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a doubt ahead of England’s Toulon Tournament opener tonight, having picked up an ankle injury in Friday’s U20 World Cup victory over South Korea.

The Arsenal man was replaced by Chelsea’s Dominic Solanke inside of half an hour and may be rested against Angola this evening given he’s had only a handful of days to recover.

Maitland-Niles has been an important player in the England side in this summer’s tournament and won’t want to jeopardise his chances of a return at the U20 World Cup by playing too soon after his injury.

He featured in all three group games for the Three Lions prior to the ankle knock, playing his part as England booked their place in the last-16, with Everton’s Kieran Dowell scoring the winning goal against South Korea.

Maitland-Niles will be keen to help England defend their Toulon tournament title, but the fixture overload could be a risk if he’s not 100%. The Three Lions certainly aren’t short on capable players either and he’ll likely be instructed by his manager to focus on being match fit for U20s duty in the coming days.

England face Cuba in the last-16 of the U20 World Cup on Wednesday.
