Former Manchester United defender, Paul McGrath, was appalled by Alexis Sanchez’s dramatic display after Leicester’s Christian Fuchs threw the ball during a game last week.

  • McGrath played for United in the ’80s
  • Alexis went down after Fuchs hit him with the ball
  • Fuchs was already on a yellow
  • McGarth reckons Alexis should have his phone taken away

Fuchs threw the ball directly at Alexis during a throw-in, which resulted in the Chilean forward throwing himself to the floor and rolling around. Although it made even most Arsenal fans cringe, the media still seem far more obsessed with Alexis’ reaction than the fact that Fuchs, who was already on a yellow card, broke the rules by throwing a ball at him and should have been sent off.

After the match, Alexis posted a picture of his split lip, on social media.

McGrath, who played for United in the 1980s, is so infuriated that he reckons that Alexis should have his phone taken after him.

“There is only one punishment that would befit the pathetic and childish antics we saw from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez last Wednesday – and that is taking his mobile phone off him for a week! the ex-defender blasted in a piece for Sunday World.

“To see one of the best players in the Premier League rolling around after Leicester’s Christian Fuchs threw the ball in his direction was one of the most ridiculous scenes we have seen this season.

“What was he thinking? Did Sanchez believe anyone would fall for antics that may have been designed to try and get Fuchs sent off?

He added, “Come on man, do you honestly think people are going to believe you were in agony because of that little cut?

“What he should have done when the ball hit him on the shoulder was stand there and make the Leicester lad look bad for throwing the ball at him.

“Instead, he became the laughing stock of football and that’s why I say his manager Arsene Wenger should take him to one side and give him a talking to.

“Block him from using his Twitter account for a few days, invent a naughty step for him at Arsenal’s training ground and tell him if he ever posts an image as stupid as that again, he will be fined.”

Again, while I can understand McGrath didn’t like the way in which Alexis reacted, Fuchs didn’t just throw the ball in his ‘direction’ – he threw it at him and should have seen red.
