Arsene Wenger has given the clearest indication yet that it is not actually him holding up an announcement regarding his future.

Speaking in an interview with Geoff Shreeves on Sky Sports, Wenger said, “Don’t make me announce today what I don’t want to do. I’m not in a position to do it.”

After the interview, Shreeves went on to explain that his understanding is that the board are working on a number of plans, including one for next season and a succession plan.

Wenger would then have to agree with these plans, which look like they will include a shakeup to the playing staff, coaching staff, and the possibility of a Sporting Director coming in, before a new deal will be put on the table again.

Whatever is going on, it could well be that this is yet another example of the Arsenal board being more than happy to let Wenger to shoulder all the blame for what’s going on at the club, regardless of how closely connected to reality that is.

Wenger sounded very much like he wants to stay but that the decision is not in his hands.

Certainly much to ponder…
