Arsene Wenger has warned Spurs that they won’t be able to keep their best players if they continue to pay them less than every other club at the top level.

  • Spurs have wage cap of £100kpw
  • Kane earns same as Lukaku
  • Wenger knows 1st hand that players will leave for money
  • Warns Spurs they need to pay players more

Arsenal have learned the hard way that not being able to pay their players the same as the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City can prove costly… so to speak.

When players see stars from other clubs getting paid double or more than they earn, their heads are going to turn, which is what Wenger reckons will happen to Spurs.

“For a longer time, if the budget is too much difference it’s impossible,” said the Frenchman.

“The best players at some stage, when you get to a level, they want to be paid like the other players at that level. If the differential is too big, you’re never able to keep your best players.”

Harry Kane reportedly earns £80,000 a week, which is the same as Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. The difference is, Kane is supposed to be one of the best strikers in the country (or the world, if you listen to Spurs fans), playing for a team that’s challenging for the title.

While Lukaku is absolutely brilliant, Everton are down in seventh and don’t appear to have aspirations of winning the Premier League any time soon.

The top four teams pay huge wages, with the likes of Diego Costa reportedly earning between £150,000 and £185,000 a week, depending what you read.

Wenger knows perhaps better than anyone that if you want to compete with the big boys on the pitch, you have to learn to compete financially as well.
