Although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been performing well at wing-back since Arsenal’s recent formation change, Arsene Wenger still sees his future as a central midfielder.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been one of Arsenal’s few stand-out players during the latter stages of this season, even nabbing an assist and deservedly winning Man of the Match against Manchester City on Sunday.

What’s even more impressive is that he’s currently playing in his sixth different position of the season: wing-back.

Since Wenger has decided to stick with playing just three at the back, the Ox, who has copious experience on the wing, has been shifted across from his recent central position, which the manager insists will help him in his future as a central midfielder.

“(Ox’s future) will be decided in the summer – we have a big job to do in the summer,” said Wenger.

“He’s done very well at wing-back.

“In the future, on long term, he will play in central midfield. What he is doing at the moment will help him to be a successful central midfielder as well. But at the moment I feel that this wing-back role has suited him well.”

The Ox’s current Arsenal contract expires next year and Wenger is adamant that the club will do their best to keep hold of the 23-year-old, who’s come on leaps and bounds over the past couple of months.
