OTD Luton pull off cup final win against Arsenal

On 24 April 1988, Arsenal lost to Luton Town 3-2 in the League Cup final.

The Gunners had already beaten Doncaster Rovers, Bournemouth, Stoke, Sheffield and Everton Wednesday to get to the final.

Arsenal were League Cup holders having beaten Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley the previous season and were therefore firm favourites to win the trophy for the second year in a row.

In League Division One, the Gunners had drawn against Luton 1-1 and beaten them 2-1 so it seemed they would know exactly what to do.

Apparently not.

Luton managed to pull off an unlikely win. They went ahead early through Brian Stein, and although Arsenal’s Martin Hayes and Alan Smith scored in the 71st and 74th minutes, making it look as if the Gunners were set for a second League Cup trophy in two years, Luton’s Danny Wilson and Stein came through with late goals to clinch the win.
